Going Green Ideas Q&A: Dark green carpet..Need ideas on colors?

Question by : Dark green carpet..Need ideas on colors?
My husband and I are renting a home with dark green carpet all over (except for the bathroom and kitchen, which is a lighter green)…The living room and dinning room are in the same area. The wall color is gingersnap. My sofa and loveseat are a dark sandy color, so I was thinking of covering them up with an ivory/cream slipcover and getting a beige rug/carpet to cover up the green a little bit. Any ideas of making this work? What color curtains? and pillows for the loveseat and sofa? What’s a nice accent color?? I would appreciate the help. Thank you.

Best answer:

Answer by Silence Dogood
since it is dark green DON’T use dark colors almost anywhere because it gives off a claustrophobic and dark kind of feeling!( you could pull it off if your going for a formal dining room but don’t use darker colors in the living room for sure!) For you sofa a nice light cream cover will look just right! The rug can also be a creamy lightish beige, it can even have a light color lining for spunk! Now you have to be careful with the drapes because the walls are gingersnap. I would use a layered drape that has cream in it but also has a color ( I would suggest a light blue, light pink, or a light creamy yellow. And whichever color you pick for the drapes also pick the same for the pillows. Mixing a little pattern and solid pillows will really compliment the room as a whole also! Really what’s most important is to not let the dark green take over the room and darken it! Hope this helped!

Question by Taylor Daniel: Which of these are renewable energy resources?
food
oil
coal
waves
biomass
wind
natural gas

b) each of the energy resources listed above can have its energy traced back to one source. What is the mysterious “one source”?

Best answer:

Answer by Jeff M
i don’t know if food would be regarded as a renewable energy source but I do know that waves, biomass and wind are.

b) my first thought would be the Sun but waves are mostly caused by the moon. then again food, oil, coal, biomass and natural gas all originated from life soo… my suggestion would be to read the book.

Eco Friendly Products Hair and Beauty Products that are Eco-Friendly?

Question by brancomicguy: Hair and Beauty Products that are Eco-Friendly?
Such as Perming solutions and Shampoos that are made organically and not tested on Animals.

Best answer:

Answer by holland
Ojon haircare uses ecofriendly products and they also help to employ South American tribes plus their stuff is great. You can learn more at http://www.ojonhaircare.com and then there is Jonathan Product who’s stuff is a little bit more L.A. but his stuff isn’t animal tested, it’s celebrity tested and it uses natural ingredients his site is http://www.jonathanproduct.com and I was just sent an email from Sephora about Cargo making a brand of lipstick that is made from corn so it’s biodegradable, and the package has flower seeds in it so after you’re done you wet the package and plant it and flowers will grow. It’s really cool, Also Stella McCartney has a new line of facial products that eco-friendly as well. You can find those and other lines at http://www.sephora.com

what sort of benefits does green tea have in store for us?

Best answer:

Answer by BabeHart
Search engines are wonderful things…look up ‘benefits of green tea’ (no quotes) and you’ll find tons of info.

Basically it’s full of antioxidants which are good for us. It also helps to increase the metabolism slightly (burns a few more calories, but not a magic weight loss aid in itself). There are various other benefits you can read about.

Question by decret ingredient: Opportunities for Chinese to come live/work in USA?
My girlfriend is Chinese. She speaks English very well. She has a bachelors degree (general studies) from a school in China, and experience working for a magazine and a travel agency.

But she is open to do any kind of work. What job opportunities are available for her in the USA? Also, where? (what company/industry?, what city/state?)

If you know anything about getting a work visa, we’d really appreciate any info on that too! Thanks!
Thanks muerto,

I’m a student in Oregon. (graduating in 1 week, not sure where/what I’ll do for work, (it depends on where my girlfriend can find something).

She is in Canton. Has never tried for a visa to the States, but has been able to get one for HongKong.

Alternative Energy Sources Alternative energy?

Question by Kitt S: Alternative energy?

Best answer:

Answer by wally
Here are two of my favorite alternative energy sources:

Oilgae: Making diesel fuel from slimy old algae. It only sunlight and carbon dioxide… yes, it removes carbon dioxide, that global warming gas, out of the air. And it does all this in the most efficient, most productive, of all the biofuels. Boeing is hopeful that it will fly its jets on this fuel in ten years.

Windbelt: Here is a handy little wind power generator that only costs a few bucks but can deliver enough power to run your lights, clock, and other low energy consuming products:

Alternative Energy Sources Q&A: How can coal be harnessed as an alternative source of energy?

alternative energy sources
by RDECOM

Question by : How can coal be harnessed as an alternative source of energy?

Best answer:

Answer by angela
By ripping the entire top off a mountain, throwing the remains (tailings) all over the place, sometimes letting this pile of detritus slide down what’s left of the mountain & destroy everything in its patch, drilling huge holes in the ground, sending people down into them with minimal safety guarantees to carve out what didn’t come off the top, and hoping to God no explosions (from gas) or cave-ins occur. Who needs solar?

Sustainable Home Design Would you offer critique on my paper on design?

Question by Bry: Would you offer critique on my paper on design?
This is the beginning of a paper for school, I am to describe what influenced me to pursue the career I am pursuing and since starting school if I am still confident that I chose the right career. This is a rough rough draft, just looking for some opinions so far (I feel like it has no rhythm as of now…)

The beats of hammers on a piece of wood and the crack of a bat to a ball are two sounds that will always take me back to my childhood. My father was a sales representative for a lumber company by day, and the founder of a baseball organization by night. It was almost inevitable that I grow up with a passion for one of the two. The baseball fields never did much for me. Unless there was a wooded area nearby, there was not much to explore and no place to wander. Empty half built houses, on the other hand, were full of imaginary wonders. When I was very young, I would create worlds inside these houses and with each new house that my father was overseeing, there was a new adventure as well. As I got older, I became more curious about the structure itself. I wanted to know everything. I wanted to know how it was being built, what was holding the roof up, how the staircase was installed. Fortunately, I had formed a relationship with some of the workers over the years, and a lot of them took the time to answer my questions and explain things to me. My inquisitiveness about the structure itself soon turned into wanting to know more about the interior. How would the family use this space? Why the architect designed specific rooms to be adjacent to certain other rooms and why some rooms were spaced further apart. When not at the construction sites, studying the blueprints my father would bring home with him became another favorite thing to do. I started becoming familiar with floor plans and eventually began trying to draw my own (though, with only graph paper and little knowledge of drafting, they were never to scale and only understood by me.)

Now that I am school and learning the ins and outs of the design field, I am even more confident that I have chosen the right path. I struggled for a long time to choose one of my many passions to pursue as a career. I went back and forth for a very long time between Creative Writing, Photography, and Interior Design. I was very confused and put off returning to school for a long time because of my indecision. One day I realized, my poetry is always inspired by one of three things: architecture, humanity, and nature. My photography is also the same way, I do not find joy in posing people for portraits but leave me alone in a city for a day and I will return with a camera full of photos of people on the streets surrounded by beautiful architecture and natural wonders. Architecture, Humanity, and Nature. How could I possibly combine the three things that inspire me the most into one daily profession? Design is important to every aspect of our lives. A home's functionality defines how the people in it live. By choosing sustainable products to use within the design, I can help protect our planet. Architecture, humanity, and nature are all closely interconnected and effect each other in intimate ways. As a designer, I can influence how they effect one another.

I have been looking at some ‘green’ options for building a house. Some that I have looked at are shipping containers, domes, kits… I have also been looking into adobe houses. Green Living Gifts The Green Mile Ending Question?

Question by Tyler Lee: The Green Mile Ending Question?
We know that Paul had been a good man all his life. He was nice to the prisoners and saved Hal’s wife etc. When he touched John, he gained part of John’s miracle. As a result, he gained a long life. But in the ending he says he was also “punished” for killing one of God’s miracles. He was punished meaning he had to see everyone who he loved die.

My question: Why was Paul punished if John told him it was okay to kill him and that he wanted to get away from the world’s cruelties? Should Paul have let him live aka go against John’s interests, wouldn’t that be more sinful compared to killing him? Someone please inform me or let me know what they think about Paul’s gift/punishment. Thanks.

*note: I haven’t read the book. Just watched the movie.

Green Living Forums Why does the leaves have light and dark green splotches on my fig tree?

Question by doglover66: Why does the leaves have light and dark green splotches on my fig tree?

Best answer:

Answer by Cakes
Sometimes plants can get splotches from underfertilization. I do not know if figs are like that. Freezing weather can discolor leaves on some plants too.

^both of those make dark splotches.

overwatering might make splotches? but you would know if u had changed ur schedule.

Also rust or nematodes can make spots. The leaf will get yellow and then bronze; so the light green might be the earliest phase. The nematodes live in the roots and will make the roots get deformed/little nodules on them; if u see those growths then u know it is them.
pic of root knot

http://greengenes.cit.cornell.edu/GrainGenes_images/fjz124c.gif

if it was nematodes, this university says that crab meal is good. You could put some in a blender and puree it; and then pour it on the soil:

http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/sustainable/peet/IPM/nematodes/c06nemat.html

The rust starts as little pinprick spots, not really splotches but they grow into splotches. The spots are mainly red, that is where the disease got it’s name. but the spots are not all red the whole time, like they may appear as something else when they start or finish.

http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/extension/homefruit/fig/fig.html

Mosaic virus causes splotches too. that disease is survivable without treatment this text says:

http://www.nafex.org/figs.htm

maybe go ask at a fig forum. Bring a pic if u can. Also they will want to know what your feeding and watering schedule is. also u should tell them about the soil (type and/or pH). And any recent changes to the plant at all.

http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/fig/

http://www.homeorchardsociety.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=1

Also u can try asking for a diagnosis at your County Extension office.

and/or sometimes the State Ag office will do tests for you. some might charge a little. and some are free. they can do tests on the roots or soil or leaves:

Green Home Design I am ready to remodel my home. Where do I begin to get ideas for what I want?

Question by kodiaks_mom: I am ready to remodel my home. Where do I begin to get ideas for what I want?
The house is basically a shell now. I will completely re-do everything but I don’t know where to start. I know there are programs to get “breaks” on the right way to do it. The furnace and hot water heater are brand new. Everything else WILL be. I just don’t know where to start. HELP!

Best answer:

Answer by chebrew2000
Open concept is really good. No walls or fewer walls between kitchen, dining, living room or family rooms. An island in the kitchen if you have the space. A walk-in pantry if you have the space. Master bedroom should have a walk in closet and its own bathroom. A guest bathroom with just a toilet and sink is good.

Question by Fakhrudeen27: what is green deal?

A Global Green Deal

The bad news is that we have to change our ways-and fast. Here’s the good news: it could be a hugely profitable enterprise.

SO WHAT DO WE DO? EVERYONE knows the planet is in bad shape, but most people are resigned to passivity. Changing course, they reason, would require economic sacrifice and provoke stiff resistance from corporations and consumers alike, so why bother? It’s easier to ignore the gathering storm clouds and hope the problem magically takes care of itself.

Such fatalism is not only dangerous but mistaken. For much of the 1990s I traveled the world to write a book about our environmental predicament. I returned home sobered by the extent of the damage we are causing and by the speed at which it is occurring. But there is nothing inevitable about our self-destructive behavior. Not only could we dramatically reduce our burden on the air, water and other natural systems, we could make money doing so. If we’re smart, we could make restoring the environment the biggest economic enterprise of our time, a huge source of jobs, profits and poverty alleviation.

What we need is a Global Green Deal: a program to renovate our civilization environmentally from top to bottom in rich and poor countries alike. Making use of both market incentives and government leadership, a 21st century Global Green Deal would do for environmental technologies what government and industry have recently done so well for computer and Internet technologies: launch their commercial takeoff.

Getting it done will take work, and before we begin we need to understand three facts about the reality facing us. First, we have no time to lose. While we’ve made progress in certain areas, air pollution is down in the U.S. -big environmental problems like climate change, water scarcity and species extinction are getting worse, and faster than ever. Thus we have to change our ways profoundly-and very soon.

Second, poverty is central to the problem. Four billion of the planet’s 6 billion people face deprivation inconceivable to the wealthiest 1 billion. To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson, nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that the bottom two-thirds of humanity will strive to improve their lot. As they demand adequate heat and food, not to mention cars and CD players, humanity’s environmental footprint will grow. Our challenge is to accommodate this mass ascent from poverty without wrecking the natural systems that make life possible.

Third, some good news: we have in hand most of the technologies needed to chart a new course. We know how to use oil, wood, water and other resources much more efficiently than we do now.

Increased efficiency-doing more with less-will enable us to use fewer resources and produce less pollution per capita, buying us the time to bring solar power, hydrogen fuel cells and other futuristic technologies on line.

Efficiency may not sound like a rallying cry for environmental revolution, but it packs a financial punch. As Joseph J. Romm reports in his book Cool Companies, Xerox, Compaq and 3M are among many firms that have recognized they can cut their greenhouse-gas emissions in half-and enjoy 50% and higher returns on investmentthrough improved efficiency, better lighting and insulation and smarter motors and building design. The rest of us (small businesses, homeowners, city governments, schools) can reap the same benefits.

Super-refrigerators use 87% less electricity than older, standard models while costing the same (assuming mass production) and performing better, as Paul Hawken and Amory and L. Hunter Lovins explain in their book Natural Capitalism. In Amsterdam the headquarters of ING Bank, one of Holland’s largest banks, uses one-fifth as much energy per square meter as a nearby bank, even though the buildings cost the same to construct. The ING center boasts efficient windows and insulation and a design that enables solar energy to provide much of the building’s needs, even in cloudy Northern Europe.

Examples like these lead even such mainstream voices as AT&T and Japan’s energy planning agency, NEDO, to predict that environmental restoration could be a source of virtually limitless profit. The idea is to retrofit our farms, factories, shops, houses, offices and everything inside them. The economic activity generated would be enormous. Better yet, it would be labor intensive; investments in energy efficiency

yield two to 10 times more jobs than investments in fossil fuel and nuclear power. In a world where 1 billion people lack gainful employment, creating jobs is essential to fighting the poverty that retards environmental progress.

But this transition will not happen by itself too many entrenched interests stand in the way. Automakers often talk green but make only token efforts to develop green cars because gas-guzzling sport-utility vehicles are hugely profitable. But every year the U.S. government buys 56,000 new vehicles for official use from Detroit. Under the Global Green Deal, Washington would tell Detroit that from now on the cars have to be hybrid-electric or hydrogen-fuel-cell cars. Detroit might scream and holler, but if Washington stood firm, carmakers soon would be climbing the learning curve and offering the competitively priced green cars that consumers say they want.

We know such government pump-priming works; it’s why so many of us have computers today. America’s computer companies began learning to produce today’s affordable systems during the 1960s while benefiting from subsidies and guaranteed markets under contracts with the Pentagon and the space program. And the cyberboom has fueled the biggest economic expansion in history.

The Global Green Deal must not be solely an American project, however. China and India, with their gigantic populations and ambitious development plans, could by themselves doom everyone else to severe global warming. Already, China is the world’s second largest producer of greenhouse gases (after the U.S.). But China would use 50% less coal if it simply installed today’s energy-efficient technologies. Under the Global Green Deal, Europe, America and Japan would help China buy these technologies, not only because that would reduce global warming but also because it would create jobs and profits for workers and companies back home.

Governments would not have to spend more money, only shift existing subsidies away from environmentally dead-end technologies like coal and nuclear power. If even half the $ 500 billion to $ 900 billion in environmentally destructive subsidies now offered by the world’s governments were redirected, the Global Green Deal would be off to a roaring start. Governments need to establish “rules of the road” so that market prices reflect the real social costs of clearcut forests and other environmental abominations. Again, such a shift could be revenue neutral. Higher taxes on, say, coal burning would be offset by cuts in payroll and profits taxes, thus encouraging jobs and investment while discouraging pollution. A portion of the revenues should be set aside to assure a just transition for workers and companies now engaged in inherently anti-environmental activities like coal mining.

All this sounds easy enough on paper, but in the real world it is not so simple. Beneficiaries of the current system, be they U.S. corporate-welfare recipients, redundant German coal miners, or cutthroat Asian logging interests-will resist. Which is why progress is unlikely absent a broader agenda of change, including real democracy: assuring the human rights of environmental activists and neutralizing the power of Big Money through campaign-finance reform.

The Global Green Deal is no silver bullet. It can, however, buy us time to make the more deep-seated changes-in our often excessive appetites, in our curious belief that humans are the center of the universe, in our sheer numbers-that will be necessary to repair our relationship with our environment.

None of this will happen without an aroused citizenry. But a Global Green Deal is in the common interest, and it is a slogan easily grasped by the media and the public. Moreover, it should appeal across political, class and national boundaries, for it would stimulate both jobs and business throughout the world in the name of a universal value: leaving our children a livable planet. The history of environmentalism is largely the story of ordinary people pushing for change while governments, corporations and other established interests reluctantly follow behind. It’s time to repeat that history on behalf of a Global Green Deal.

Put live potted plants in air conditioned buildings to improve the air quality. I don’t know how many but one per person is a good start. Maybe your boss can sponsor a contest for the person who brings in the most practical plant will get tickets for two at a fine dining restaurant, movies passes or a pay check bonus.

Please consider the results of “NASA’s Clean Air Plant Study” that can improve your environment drastically.

“Common indoor plants may provide a valuable weapon in the fight against rising levels of indoor air pollution. Those plants in your office or home are not only decorative, but NASA scientists are finding them to be surprisingly useful in absorbing potentially harmful gases and cleaning the air inside modern buildings.”

“NASA research has consistently shown that living, green and flowering plants can remove several toxic chemicals from the air in building interiors. You can use plants in your home or office to improve the quality of the air to make it a more pleasant place to live and work – where people feel better, perform better, any enjoy life more.”

TOP 10 plants most effective in removing: formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide from the air.

Green Living Nyc Planning A Trip To NYC In October?

Question by : Planning A Trip To NYC In October?
My husband and I and our two friends are planning to take a weekend trip to NYC in October. We live in Ohio, so we thought about heading to Niagara Falls and staying there for a night then spending the rest of our trip in NYC. Are there any suggestions on where to stay? Also, any insight about attractions to see, must see’s, free events and local restaurants or anything along those lines would be appreciated. We are all very down to Earth and would love to get the feel of NY and what it’s really all about but by being safe at the same time. Thanks!
We don’t have a set budget because none of us know what to expect. But we would like to keep it as cheap as possible.

Best answer:

Answer by Consultant
You did not indicate what your budget was, so the following are recommended 5 star hotels with prices for the weekend of Oct 13 – 15. All are excellent choices. Most 5 star hotels charge 2, 3, or 4 times these amounts, so consider them really good prices.

$ 382.50 per day = Sofitel New York
$ 300.00 per day = InterContinental The Barclay New York
$ 287.50 per day = Smyth – A Thompson Hotel
$ 269.00 per day = The Carlton New York

Plan on doing LOTS of walking! ONLY wear GOOD walking shoes.

Free things to do:
1. Take the Staten Island Ferry – 30 minutes each way from NYC to Staten Island – best deal in town!

2. Walk through Central Park. If the carousel is still running – hop on (charge for this).

3. Walk around Rockefeller Center.

4. Visti the NYC Public Library – interesting interior architecture.

5. Take the subway to Brooklyn and walk along the promenade.

6. Downtown, NYC, walk along the promenade from the World Financial Center to the southern tip of Manhattan. If you’ve never been there you will be surprised. Quite beautiful. Magnificent view of Jersey City and the famous Colgate Clock.

7. Take the PATH (subway) train from the World Trade Center (minimal cost) and walk along the promenade in both directions over there. Terrific at night when it gets dark as you can look back at Manhattan and see all the lights on.

It is EASY to get around on the subway – get a Metrocard and you can use it both on the NYC subway and the PATH system.

Places to Eat:

There are so many good places to eat at every price point that any listing would not make sense. The competition for good food in NYC is fierce. Get a copy of Zagat’s Guide to NYC and that will give you lots of ideas of where to go.

Recommendation – have your main meal at lunch instead of dinner and you will save a bundle of money. Eat light in the evening – you will save money and most likely sleep better also.

Safety: Men should carry their wallets in their front pockets – not their rear pockets. Women should carry their purses with closure facing their body, not the other way around.

Don’t look like a tourist – that means if the signal light light turns red, and there is no traffic, cross the street. Only tourists wait for the light to turn green. No New Yorker would ever wait for a signal to turn green!

Green Living Room Q&A: I need ideas for painting my living room.?

Question by KRAof*daNRA: I need ideas for painting my living room.?
I am going to paint my living room this weekend and I just wanted some neat ideas about what colors to use.
I was wanting to do one wall for an accent wall as well.
My furniture and decor is really earthy. Colors like tan, beige, dark brown, black are the main colors in my living room. I love these colors but I want the walls to pop. I DO NOT want to paint them brown or beige. I need a color that is happy and cheerful. I was thinking yellow but I decided against it. My bathroom is lilac purple and all the bedrooms are a sage green. I just want a funky a fun color to go with the rest of my house.
I am normally really good at this but I have thought about it so long that it just all gets mushy in my head now!
Thank you for your ideas!!

Best answer:

Answer by westpalmharbor
Have you considered a shade of red for the accent wall? red goes great with more colors than you would think if you choose the right shade. turquoise would also really POP if you are looking for something more funky, but it’s not a color that blends well with earth tones.

Eco Green Living how to go green enviorment

Question by somtimes love comes around: how to go green enviorment
i want to go green and become enviormental freindly can someone please tell me how to do that.thank you

Best answer:

Answer by Nah
There are many things you can do to live green and some are very inexpensive too!

~Of course, recycle everything you can! (Ex: cans, bottles, plastics, paper, ect.)
~Buy energy saving light bulbs
~Buy things like clothes, paper, ect that are made from recycled materials
~Use reusable batteries or recycle dead batteries properly
~Use reusable shopping bags
~If you have plastic shopping bags, use them instead of just tossing them. They can be used to pick up dog poo, line small trash cans, ect.
~Try not to use paper napkins or paper towel as much as possible. Instead use cloth napkins that can be washed.
~Try to use fewer paper plates and more washable ones.
~Take shorter showers
~Turn off lights whenever possible
~Try to buy more organic foods and local foods (for example, at a farmer’s market)
~Use regular silverware, not plastic
~Use eco friendly products in replace of regular dish washing liquids, house cleaners, ect. (Greenworks)
~Use cold water to wash clothes (Tide Cold water works great)
~On a nice day, turn off the air/heat and open some windows. You save of the cost, get a nice fresh breeze, and help the environment.
~Plant trees around your house to shade and save on using more air conditioning
~Buy one stainless steel, reusable, water bottle instead of using regular plastic ones and then getting rid of them. This one you can clean and use over and over again!
~Change the setting on your sprinklers to use less water
~Buy eco friendly fertilizers (I think they have them at Home Depot)
~Buy or lease a hybrid if possible
~Walk or ride a bike wherever possible
~Carpool if possible

These are just a few ideas I can think of, but you can also go to www.gogreen.com for some more tips. Good luck :)
