Green Living Blogs What wall paint will go with black trim?

Question by : What wall paint will go with black trim?
My boyfriend and i are moving into a house and the landlord wants black trim in the entire house including our bedroom. We want something with color (not white, beige, grey, or yellow) but we also don’t want to live in a cave. Are there any suggestions????

Best answer:

Answer by Kyle
Black goes with anything! Get creative…You could paint all the walls different colors (matching colors would be best), you could paint three the same color and the fourth a lighter matching color, or you cold paint them all one shade. I’d go with a dark ‘royal’ purple on three and maybe a red (maroon?) on the fourth, if it were me.

Green Living Solutions What proportions of yeast and sugar solution...etc do you need to make beer and wine?

Question by Carrot, the Peanut: What proportions of yeast and sugar solution…etc do you need to make beer and wine?
What is the difference? What is hte chemical theory? What wuantities do you need? How is the process different between beer and wine? Can you mix an orange sugar solution with many other sugar solutions and create original forms of beer and alcohol?
Thanks Goldista. You know quite a lot. I was somewhat familiar with the process already However, I was really looking for proportions between yeast and sugar solution…etc. How much of each ingredient do I need for homebrewery?
Proportions please… How much of each ingredient? You can’t just mix random amounts…

Best answer:

Answer by Goldista
Barley, water, hops and yeast — brewers combine these four simple ingredients to make beer.

But it’s not just a matter of mixing the right amount of each ingredient and voila!…you have beer. A complex series of biochemical reactions must take place to convert barley to fermentable sugars, and to allow yeast to live and multiply, converting those sugars to alcohol. Commercial breweries use sophisticated equipment and processes to control hundreds of variables so that each batch of beer will taste the same.

Barley is the seed of a grain that looks a lot like wheat. Before barley can be used to make beer, it must be malted, which involves a natural conversion process.

First, the barley must be allowed to germinate, or start to sprout. This is done by soaking the barley in water for several days, and then draining the barley and holding it at about 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15.5 C) for five days. This allows the husk to open and barley to start to sprout — at this point it is called green malt. Like all seeds, the barley contains nutrients that can sustain the growing seed until it can produce its own nutrients using photosynthesis. During the germination process, enzymes released by the plant convert these nutrients (which are starches) into sugars that can feed the plant while it grows. The key to the malting process is to stop the germination of the barley at a point when the sugar-producing enzymes are present but most of the starch is still unconverted. Eventually, these enzymes will produce the sugars that will feed the yeast to make the alcohol in the beer.

After this natural process has released the enzymes, the green malt is dried by gradually raising the temperature. The intensity of the malt flavor and color depends on how high the temperature is raised during the drying process. One final step must be completed — removing any small roots that formed during germination — and the malted barley is ready to begin the brewing process. Most breweries buy barley that has already been malted to their specifications.

Hops – The hops used to make beer are the flower of the hop vine, which is a member of the hemp family (Cannabaceae). Hops are closely related to another member of the hemp family that you may have heard of — cannabis, or marijuana, although hops do not have the psychoactive effects associated with marijuana.

Hops contain acids, which give beer its bitterness, as well as oils that give beer some of its flavor and aroma. Adding hops to beer also inhibits the formation of certain bacteria that can spoil the beer.

There are many different kinds of hops, each of which gives a different taste, aroma and amount of bitterness to the beer it is used in. In the United States, hops are grown mainly in Washington state. Hops are also grown in Germany, Southern England and Australia.

Yeast – Yeast is the single-celled micro-organism that is responsible for creating the alcohol and carbon dioxide found in beer. There are many different kinds of yeasts used to make beer; and just as the yeast in a sourdough starter gives sourdough bread its distinctive flavor, different types of beer yeast help to give beer its various tastes.

There are two main categories of beer yeast: ale yeast and lager yeast. Ale yeast is top fermenting, meaning it rises near the surface of the beer during fermentation, and typically prefers to ferment at temperatures around 70 F (21 C). Lager yeasts are bottom fermenting. They ferment more slowly and prefer colder temperatures, around 50 F (10 C).

Wine is an alcoholic beverage derived from grapes by fermentation, much the way beer is derived from the fermentation of grains. Unlike beer, wines are not carbonated (except champagne and sparkling wines). They also have about twice the alcohol content of beer.

Grapes for winemaking are grown in many areas of the U.S., as well as other countries such as France, Chile and Australia. The major wine-producing area in the U.S. is California, which accounts for 80 to 90 percent of U.S. wine production. Typically, the type of grape that is used to make the wine gives the wine its name, such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. However, some wines are blends of various types of wines, such as a Semillon Chardonnay. The blending of various wines to produce a given flavor is part of the art of the winemaking.
In the fall, it is crush time. The grapes are harvested. Some vineyards use mechanical harvesting techniques, but most hire workers to pick the grapes by hand. The grapes are then brought to the winery. Many wineries are located on or near the vineyards. If the wineries are far away, the grapes are shipped in refrigerated trucks.
Once the grapes reach the winery, they get crushed. Inside the crusher, there is a perforated, rotating drum. The holes in the drum allow the juice and the skins of the grapes to pass through, but keep the stems inside the drum. The crushed grapes and juice are called must.

What happens next depends on the type of grape. Red-grape must is sent directly to the fermentation tanks. White-grape must is sent first to a wine press, where the juice is separated from the skins, because white wines are fermented from skinless grapes.
The must, whether from red grapes or pressed white grapes, is ultimately sent to the fermentation tanks. The fermentation tanks are airtight, made of stainless steel and can hold 1,500 or 3,000 gallons (5,678 or 11,356 liters). The tanks are cooled with glycol to maintain a temperature in the 40-F range (4-C range). The winemaker adds sugar and yeast to start the process of fermentation. The type of yeast and the amount of sugar added depends on the type of grape.

When the yeast first hits the must, concentrations of glucose sugar (C6H12O6) are very high, so it is through diffusion that glucose enters the yeast. In fact, it keeps entering the yeast as long as there is glucose in the solution. As each glucose molecule enters the yeast, it is broken down in a 10-step process called glycolysis. The product of glycolysis is two three-carbon sugars, called pyruvates, and some ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP supplies energy to the yeast and allows it to multiply. The two pyruvates are then converted by the yeast into carbon dioxide (CO2) and ethanol (CH3CH2OH), which is the alcohol in wine. The overall reaction is:

C6H12O6 => 2(CH3CH2OH) + 2(CO2)
The fermentation process takes about two to four weeks. During this time, the winemaker samples the fermenting must and measures the pH or acid levels to determine that the fermentation process is proceeding as it should.

Once the fermentation process is completed, red wines are sent to the press to separate the skins from the wine. The red wines are then filtered to remove the yeast. White wines are allowed to settle and are filtered to remove the yeast. Once the yeasts are removed, the wines are stored in either stainless steel storage tanks or oak barrels (oak gives many wines a characteristic flavor) depending on the type of wine. In some red wines, a second type of fermentation, called malolactic fermentation, is undertaken while in storage. In malolactic fermentation, the winemaker adds a bacteria to the wine that breaks down malic acid, a byproduct of aerobic (oxygen-requiring) metabolism, into lactic acid, a byproduct of anaerobic (no oxygen) metabolism. Lactic acid is a milder acid than malic acid. The aging process can be anywhere from three months to three years.

After the wine has aged sufficiently, as determined by the winemaker, it is time to bottle and package it for sale. The operator pumps the wine from the storage tank to the bottling machine. There, bottles are loaded by hand and a pre-measured amount of wine flows into each bottle. After each bottle is filled, the operator removes it and places it in the corking machine. The machine draws a vacuum inside the bottle that sucks the pre-loaded cork into the neck of the bottlel.

white because you have a lot of colors going on. white is a neutral color and can make the space look bigger. it is also very contemporary if you add some black artwork on the wall.

Pure Green Living What is the best color for anyone who wants to be inspired?

Question by Ann M: What is the best color for anyone who wants to be inspired?
Is there a shade, or a tone, or a range of colors that help with creating art or an artful life? And how does one use it — by wearing it, living in it (decorating, cars, buildings), eating it (fruits, greens, grains), or visualizing it all around? What are the ways to find the value of what we see around us, knowing that color is a variable of light waves? and how can we continue to relate to others if we are different waves of color trying to create a way in the world? Do we focus on our own color and create reflections of it? Reflections of others? and how do we define creativity?

Eco Products A question about eco-friendly cleaning solutions?

Question by muddlepuddle: A question about eco-friendly cleaning solutions?
I want to start using more eco-friendly cleaning products in my house both for the health of my family and for the health of the planet. I have found various websites that give you recipes of for different uses basically using combos of water vinegar lemon soda etc…. but I am very pedantic about my bathroom and my floors. I like to be sure I kill the bacteria each time I clean them. So can anyone find me a website that actually gives an anti-bac eco friendly cleaning solution? I know in general lemons and vinegar are anti-bac but when you dilute them with water are they still anti-bac? Help!

Question by aia4spoc: What is the official .gov website where I can find info about getting citizenship status from marriage?
I have lived in the States for the last 15 years and was planning on applying for US citizenship this spring. However, I am also planning on marrying a US citizen next fall, so I was wondering if it would be less of a hassle and take less time if I just waited for that. I know USCIS.gov has all the citizenship info, but I can’t find the part about marriages on there.

Best answer:

Answer by shippo
Are you a green card holder? if so you can apply for citizenship, all you have to do is go to USCIS homepage and get all info you need.
Marrying a US a citizen will take you 3 or 5 years before you can apply for a citizenship ,and you need all the proof that you stayed married for all those 3 years.

Green Living Consulting How do you apply for a green card to the US?

Question by kringle: How do you apply for a green card to the US?
I intend to move from Ireland and want to know how i go about it, i mean how long will at last and what will it allow me to do?

Best answer:

Answer by jenny s
You are definitely going to have to consult the US Citizenship and Immigration Services website for this question (http://www.uscis.gov) or consult an immigration lawyer.

There are just too many ways and reasons why you might be able to obtain a visa to come into the country. You will need a visa first and then after awhile you will be able to apply for the “green card” (which isn’t actually green). Depending on where you live in the country will determine how long it takes to get one due to how many other people are using that particular service center for their immigration services (Houston is the worst in the country I’ve heard because it is so busy).
Once you get the “green card” you are allowed to work and live here indefinitely (although it has to be renewed every 10 years) but you aren’t allowed to vote or work for some government offices (ex can’t be a politician).

Good luck! It is a long and arduous process that costs quite a bit of money and is very, very frustrating to say the least. My advice- come visit with a Visa and see if you really even want to get a green card. You might find the grass is not greener on this side of the ocean.

Eco Green Living Q&A: Ways to eat healthy and green with only a microwave?

Question by megan: Ways to eat healthy and green with only a microwave?
My husband, myself, and our 18 month old daughter live in a small apartment with only a microwave. We’re also expecting. I’m trying to make the best both healthy and eco-friendly choices for us. We eat manily vegitarian meals, but are not vegitarians. We eat alot of organic foods, as much as possible. It is very difficult to do so without a stove. We are also pretty busy and need some ideas for quick meals, also inexpensive. Any ideas? Thanks!
thanks a bunch, I was about to ask about those!

Best answer:

Answer by meadow
ok my suggestion is getting an electric pan
#1-it works wonders for a small apartment, space wise and in the summer it sure is less heat than a stove
#2-it is very inexpensive, i purchased one for $ 20 and found a second one at a thrift store for $ 2.99
#3-you can basically do anything with that pan that you can with a regular stove and oven
#4-if you are going eco-friendly it, you have to think of your electric usage too and it is far more eco-friendly than a microwave
#5-it’s an easy clean up and you only have the one pan to clean

I had mine after a divorce where I ended up with no stove and a mini fridge to work with and 3 boys to feed and I lived like that for about a year, I made everything you could make on a regular stove, I even made spinach lasagna (one of my childrens favs) and cake in it

Jade is nice, you could also go with sage green.Have some art work with black frames and bright colors on the ppictures including yellows, rust shades.Instead of plants,I buy fake potted grass plants. You can also buy the grass or reeds alone and add them to a vase.Clear or solid. On window treatment user a solid shade that will match the artwork well.Something that will pick up the colors nicely like a light gold shade. An area rug with checkers which includes all these colors will bring it all together

I live in Montana and have an idea that would generate jobs statewide, provide clean energy, and help the country go green all at once… Who do I contact, how do I get it heard by the right people?

Best answer:

Answer by J.
Talk with yout local representative. Talk to you local chamber of commerce, Talk to the Montana Commerce Department. Do not be shocked if they already heard of something similar.

Unless you yourself are prepared to dump a ton of money into the idea- no one else is likely to either.

If you formulate a business plan, pull together some like minded investors- if the idea has merit and if there is a demand for it- it should gain momentum on it’s own merits.

Sustainable Green Living Where does a giant panda live and what is its habitat like?

Question by Madison: Where does a giant panda live and what is its habitat like?
I know they live in the mountains in CHina but beyond that I’m pretty clueless!

Best answer:

Answer by Eric
Wild Habitat:
Habitat:
Giant pandas live in broadleaf and coniferous forests with a dense understory of bamboo, at elevations between 5,000 and 10,000 feet. Torrential rains or dense mist throughout the year characterizes these forests, often shrouded in heavy clouds.

Geographic distribution:
Giant pandas live in a few mountain ranges in central China, in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. They once lived in lowland areas, but farming, forest clearing, and other development now restrict giant pandas to the mountains.

Zoo Habitats: (http://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/giantpandas/pandafacts/default.cfm)
At the new Giant Panda Habitat, two new yards feature several enriching features for both animal and visitor enjoyment and add more than 12,000 square feet to the pandas’ outdoor exhibit. Additions to the indoor exhibit include a new room with a rocky outcrop and waterfall, another den, and more visitor viewing space and informational exhibits.

Many sustainable design strategies, such as planted green roofs to reduce stormwater runoff, were incorporated into the new habitat. Other elements include a solar hot water system; natural tree-resin bound paving material, instead of petroleum-based asphalt, on the visitor paths; recycled rubber; sustainably harvested ipe wood, which is naturally resistant to pests and rot; and dried bamboo, because it is rapidly renewable resource and does not deplete the environment when harvested.

Outdoor Exhibit:
The pandas’ state-of-the-art Giant Panda Habitat is designed to mimic the pandas’ natural habitat of rocky, lush terrain in China. Each element has a purpose—from helping the pandas stay cool in hot weather to giving them a place to hide when they need privacy. There are rock and tree structures perfect for climbing; grottoes, pools, and streams for keeping cool; and shrubs and trees, including weeping willows, corktrees, and maples, and several species of bamboo.

Renewable Energy Is it true Bill Gates is selling all of his shares in microsoft in order to buy up renewable energy stocks?

Question by William M: Is it true Bill Gates is selling all of his shares in microsoft in order to buy up renewable energy stocks?
Okay, here’s what I read; Bill Gates has very little involvement with Microsoft these days and is slowly dumping all of his MS shares quietly, and reinvesting his money into renewable energy stocks like wind and solar power. Is this really true that he realises Microsoft is under the knife to the likes of Google and Apple and he knows it so he’s doing this? Just curious.

Best answer:

Answer by calzrhe
I suppose he wants influence of the new industry, and with his experience and skills as a CEO, hopefully he can revolutionize it.

Sustainable Home Design what are the negative aspects of using environmentally friendly building designs?

Question by : what are the negative aspects of using environmentally friendly building designs?
This question is for my homework and I cannot find the answer to this question… I’m completely stumped. I have no idea. Pleas help me!

Best answer:

Answer by MaximumOverdrive
The main negative aspects of using Environmental Friendly Building Designs and I assume you also mean actual construction as well, is mainly cost.

Environmental Friendly anything usually costs a lot more than less environmentally friendly options. Mainly because environmentally friendly usually means sustainable or reused which is always more expensive. This is mainly a scalability issue, and could be overcome if the market (home buyers, corporations that rent commercial space) demand environmentally friendly designs.

Going Green Facts how do you roast green chilies?

Question by flip4urkandi: how do you roast green chilies?
i live in an apartment and don’t have a grill. we used to buy green chilie already roasted in arizona, but i can’t buy them here in texas:( how can i roast my own with just the oven?
i have an electric stove, not a gas stove

Best answer:

Answer by hopflower
I roast mine over an open flame (if you have a gas stove, of course). Otherwise you could broil them. Wait until the pepper skins begin to blister and get brown, then turn them and grill the other side. Put them on a plate to cool. Then peel them if you wish. Or you can put peppers on a sheet pan lined with foil, and roast in a hot (500°F) oven, under the broiler, or on the grate of a barbecue grill. The more intense the heat, the more often you need to turn the peppers. They should be blackened and blistered rather evenly when done. This can take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes depending on which method you use

It amazes me you cannot find that in Texas, though. I bet you are looking in the wrong places.

Green Walls Living Walls What color should I paint my kitchen cabinets?

Question by Juanita S: What color should I paint my kitchen cabinets?
The walls in the kitchen are like a tan/sand color and the living room walls are like a pine green color. The master bedroom is maroon. We’re trying to sell the house. We could change the pine and maroon colors too I suppose, but just to do the kitchen cabinets, what color would you recommend? Right now they’re white, and I hate to go white again because they show everything. If it helps, the kitchen floor is tan/brown hard tile.

Best answer:

Answer by Sage
I would choose one of the tile colors. The brown would hide dirt too.

Green Living Room Decorating Ideas How should I decorate my appartment?

Question by manta.panda: How should I decorate my appartment?
Me and my boy friend are moving together and I cant wait to decorate the appartment but I need some help finding things. I had an old Delias magazine and it had a sexy bed spread that was in a peacock print that was dark purple and bright blue and they had a sheer dark purble fabric hanging around the bed my boyfriend and I both love this look but the bedspread is no longer for sale I need help finding something it dosnt have to be a peacock print but just something sexy, young and romantic. Then for the living room there is hard wood floors and the wall paper is like a dark blue and white pattern which I like alot but I need some help on how to decorate like what colors I should use what color sofa, what kind of lamps, what kind of art stuff like that. So please if you guys will give me somewebsites or just ideas from your head. Remeber this is an appartment so I cant change the wall paper and things.

Best answer:

Answer by Rickey R
Just one thing to remember about apartments, they are usually fairly small. So brighter colors will give it a sense of openess. To many dark colors, and you will begin to feel the walls close in. Also less is better. To many accents will make an apartment feel more cluttered faster than a house. IKEA is a great store that you can shop on line at.
