Cities are greener, though they obviously has a bigger impact on the land you’re actually building on. But New Yorkers consume less energy and have a smaller impact on the planet than someone living in the burbs, for a lot of reasons. They don’t need to travel as far because their jobs and shops are close, and when they do travel public transportation/walking are more feasible than in the suburbs. It takes less energy to heat an apartment than a house because heat lost through most of an apartments walls will warm the neighbors apts, unlike a house where the energy is lost completely. Goods can be shipped to citydwellers more efficiently because they are clustered together, and are often near distribution hubs. Infrastructure is also cheaper and more efficient- a mile of road (or power lines, sewer, etc) in NYC will serve many more people than a mile in the country or suburbs.
