Why is it good for the environment? What problems is going green going to help?

That depends what you mean by ‘going green’. I’m assuming you mean individual lifestyle changes, and what they are going to do when environmental problems are so big?

One basic argument is that it’s better to do something than nothing – attempting to reduce your environmental impact is likely to have more effect than not trying (if you’ve heard of it, the story of the starfish on the beach is relevant).

It is likely to be good for the environment indirectly. One reason often given is that you can act as an example for other people, in terms of encouraging them to change. This can be tricky – there is sometimes a trade-off between doing lots for the environment, and isolating yourself from the people you’re trying to change.

Here’s a reason you may not have thought of – it can help you understand how other people think. See what the response is like to ‘going green’, and it will give you a sense of the wider social factors that need to shift. Hope this was useful in some way..
