i am buying a new home and am all about being eco friendly. so which one is the most eco friendly?

No one can answer that. It totally depends on SO many things. Clearly a house you own you have all the control over. You can have a low water yard, use no chemicals etc. With any communal housing you have a gardner and they use whatever. But you take up less space for more people. What does that mean though? An old building is more eco friendly than a new one because it is getting more use from the same resources. But an old building might need to be retrofitted to be more energy efficient. The question then is, at what point are the retrofits vs the waste of the working less efficient originals going to pay off. This will vary by house.
So can you see where this is going? Get a place which cuts your commute down as much as possible and which is not bigger than you need. The rest you will have to figure out on a case by case basis using MUCH more math than can be done here.
