Sustainable Home Design Q&A: Sustainable architecture, can the benefits outweigh the costs?

Question by mazeman25: Sustainable architecture, can the benefits outweigh the costs?
This is the research question I thought of for a white paper I have due in a few weeks. Any ideas, web sites, articles, studies, or research papers would be helpful.
A white paper is a very formalized research paper. My instructor told me she did one for her masters degree program. By ARCHITECTURE I mean the design of buildings, including; homes, businesses, and industrial infrastructure. By sustainable I mean building with renewable resources, utilizing renewable enerery sources, and heating and cooling efficient.
Can the extra money spent to build a “green” building return enough money, with reduced energy and heating costs and increased market value?

You’ll probably want to refine it a bit. Social, educational, financial, environmental, PR.

Try googling ‘low-impact’

What’s a white paper? What academic level is it?
