Green Tip Q&A: How to wire a Phone Jack?

Question by John1690: How to wire a Phone Jack?
I have an older phone jack, with ONLY the yellow, black, green and read wires; NONE of the newer blue/white, orange/white, etc. Along with the 4 wires, are three thick wires in a black coating. I have tried hooking together the wires “green tip with green ring, red tip with red ring, black tip with black ring, and yellow tip with yellow ring” but when I plug in the phone there are no dial tones. The other phone jacks in the house are wired this way and they work, so I suspect the thick black wires are important. Please tell me the exact procedure (with tons of details) in how to wire the phone jack so it works correctly. I have searched the net already and phone numerous site that provided no help. Please provide as much help as you can. Thank you.

Hi there, If you only have one line, you only will be using two of the wires, normally the red and green, but most importantly, what pins they go on, which would be pins 2 and 3, depending on your jack, your probable have 4 places for wires, like I said if you only have one line, you will only be using 2 of them. Typically the 3 thick wires with the coating are wires coming into the house, , mostly on older houses, its your 2 wires I was talking about and a ground. if this jack never worked, it could be disconnected at another point in house, or was it attached to maybe another line at one time? if add onto your question if I can help more… Sometimes diagnostics can be tricky because if you dont know the history of the house, that jack could have been added in as an extention from another jack somewhere else in the house.
