Green Living Nyc What do you typically do in weight watchers?

Question by ZzZzZz: What do you typically do in weight watchers?
I was thinking of joining after talking to my mother in law but how does it work? I gained 50 lbs baby weight pregnancy and its been 2 years. I love cooking and can cook everything from bread to all kinds of desserts. I was just wondering generally what do you do? Especially with the working out and what are the meetings all about? I live in manhattan, nyc and would have to bring my daughter. Are the meetings free?

I think the current membership is $ 42.50 a month which entitles you to go to the weekly meetings. They usually last about 30 minutes and talk on different topics every week. They are always interesting. Also, there is a general discussion from the group about things they have learned or experienced they share with others. It’s supposed to give you moral support.

For the $ 42.50 monthly fee, they set you up on a monthly draft on your bank account. You can cancel it any time you want to. They send you a monthly pass in the mail which you use to get into the weekly meetings.

The first time you go and join, they ask you to stay 30 minutes after the meeting so that they can explain the program to you. You are supposed to keep a daily food journal and figure your points. You can do it online. It’s a pretty good program. You can make a lot of friends at the meetings which will give you encouragement.

You weigh in every time you go, but it is held confidential and nobody knows what your weight is. You keep a little book with your weight progress. You can do your own exercise program if you want to and also keep it posted in your journal online.

Generally, the goal is to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week. Some lose more, some lose less.

You can go to the first meeting free and see what they do and how the program works.

I noticed that you said you cook bread and desserts. Well, I can tell you that you won’t lose any weight eating bread and desserts. If you truly want to lose, you have to eat a lot of green leafy vegetables. And, even though Weight Watchers has fruits listed at 0 points, almost all fruits are loaded with sugar and you will NOT lose weight eating a lot of fruits. Berries are okay.

You have to remember that Weight Watchers is a business and they are interested in making money. Their program is skewed so that you will only lose about 1 pound a week. That’s because they want you to keep coming back month after month after month paying that $ 42.95 (renewal fee) every month for the rest of your life.

I personally think there is an advantage of going to the meetings over the online method because at the meeting you have to go in and weigh in front of someone who will record your weight. It’s called accountability and is one of the most important things you need in doing a diet . . . is someone to whom you are accountable. If you’re just doing it online, you have no one to be accountable to other than yourself, and we all know how that works.

If you’re going to do the program, I would recommend that you do the monthly pass and go to the meetings. You would get so much more out of it than just sitting at home trying to do it by yourself. In fact, stats have shown that people who attend the meetings have a three times greater success rate than those who try to go it alone. Good luck.

BTW, it is okay to take your daughter. They will not charge for her.
