Green Modular Homes Q&A: Re-wire phone from Time Warner to Verizon?

Question by Amanda J: Re-wire phone from Time Warner to Verizon?
Hi, the previous people who owned our home had time warner cable phone service. I was unaware and I called Verizon and our service was set up, however there is no dial tone in the house. Verizon came out today to check and make sure the connection on the outside of the house was working and it was, they said I would need to rewire the phone jacks for regular phone again and that it would cost $ 95.00 per jack. Is there anyway I can do this myself and how would i go about doing it? I don’t know what the cable company would have done to the phone jacks? Please help someone… thanks!

In the old days you had a phone company and they connected the service to the connections inside the home. Then AT&T was broken into separate companies in the 1980s (as I recall) and this whole pay as you go for each service started. Be that as it may here is what you need to do:

When the previous owner installed Time Warner’s phone service if they had an old phone wiring they should have disconnected the red and green wires from the box outside the home which go to the outlets inside the home. The Yellow and Black wires are usually always disconnected unless you have two phone lines or power for a Princess phone that lights up (on some phone systems this was how you got power to those phones lamps).

When they disconnected the red and green wires they were supposed to connect them to the box that the Time Warner people install with a simple connection usually through an unused phone outlet but maybe by connecting the red and green wires to some kind of modular adapter which plugged into one of those unused outlets.

If you can find where they left the old connection and reconnect it – testing it for shorts with an ohmmeter before connecting it – the all you have to do is connect red to red and green to green and it should work. Or you could probably hire a contractor who does telephone work for less than $ 95 per connection depending on where you live. Or you could find do it yourself books on this subject in your local library or book store (At least I would think you could).

If the old connections (jacks) are wired right all you need to do is bring the wiring from those (replacing the wiring as necessary with the same color code used to make it work with the new phone line.
