Living Green Expo Q&A: What do I need for a bearded dragon(supplies, etc).?

Question by : What do I need for a bearded dragon(supplies, etc).?
I want to get a bearded dragon and I need some information on what I’m going to need to buy when I’m at the reptile expo to buy one. How many crickets should I get? They need to last about 2-3 weeks for 1 bearded dragon because I go to the pet store every 2-3 weeks to get more bedding and food for my guinea pigs. How much would everything cost including the lizard? I’m going to get 230 dollars for christmas and I still want money to get myself some things for school. A bearded dragon where I live is $ 69.99. How often should I dust my crickets in a feeding. Are my facts right so far?:

* When young, should be fed 2-3 times a day. As much as they can consume in 10-15 minutes.
* They need 2 lamps, a basking lamp and a UVB lamp. The basking side needs to be about 90-100 degrees. The temps should be dropped a little though at night because in their natural habitat(desert) the temperature drops to about 70 degrees.
* They need rocks so they can chill out on them, but not to many so they can still have roaming space.
* Should NOT be fed mealworms as they have very thick shells which is bad for beardies since they can’t digest them easily.
* When their fully grown, they should have at least a 40 gallon long.
* If your bearded dragon is young, they should mostly be fed crickets because they need the extra nutrients to grow. You will also need to give them a little bit of vegetables. When they start aging, you feed less live foods and more vegetables.
* When your bearded dragon is an adult, it should be fed 80% vegetables and 20% insects.
* Bearded dragons don’t necessarily need water because they get water from their vegetables. Mist the vegetables so the beardies can lick the extra water of them. You can add a water dish if you want to.
* NEVER use sand for your bearded dragon because they might accidentaly consume some of the sand when hunting for crickets. This WILL cause impaction.
* DO NOT feed your bearded dragons lettuce of any kind because they have no nutrional value for your beardies. Feed more darker vegetables like kale, mustard greens, collard greens, etc.

Is this good so far?

Your facts are all right, i feed my adult dragon mealworms but VERY rarely. They are actually a better source of meat, also before you feed your dragon crickets, feed the crickets first. They are very little in protein, they really are like eating nothing to the dragon, but if the crickets are full the dragon will get more in him. Uhm sand, they say is bad for them but honestly, it makes no difference. Get him a stick that will be wide enough to lay on, they really love their sticks lol, and they do need water actually if you put the sink on a dribble and put the tip of their nose under it sometimes they drink it and they can eat lettuce but the darker greens are way better (NEVER feed spinach) and that sounds about right for them. Also when its a nice hot day you can put them outside in the sun, they can get this bone disease as they get older if they dont have enough sunlight. DUST YOUR CRICKETS WITH CALCIUM AND VITAMINS EVERYTIME YOU FEED. Make sure the cage is between 90-100 degrees F. Dont let the stick get too close to the heat lamp or they will cook themselves.

GOODLUCK WITH YOU DRAGON!
