simply said, to sustainable means to be able to live & survive continuously in the ecosystem with available resources.
it doesn’t mean just the lives of individuals, but the continuance of the species through centuries. ecosystem, until now, is still limited to this planet earth. it comprises all aspects of life; social, economy and environment.
organisms(incl. humankind) need materials(incl. food) and energy to live. that’s why human extracts/mines natural resources, manufactures goods, generates energies(electricity, heat, etc) and consumes them all.
so to be sustainable is, that organisms(again incl. humankind) fulfill their needs adequately and sufficiently, with the limitation of existing natural resources. seeing how we have been doing now, we can simply say that human does not live sustainably. most of your energy generation are still from fossil fuels which will not last forever with this rate of extraction and consumption we are doing. the needs of human individuals are not adequately, sufficiently, equally fulfilled yet… some have too less, but some have too much.
that’s about sustainability.
as for the green seal. you mean green dot recycling mark on products packagings, don’t you?
it informs consumers, that the products/packagings are provided to be recycled after its use. recycling material helps reducing extraction rate of valuable natural resources. putting a material into a closed loop, in which we can use it more and more times(of course with different recycling processes in between), not just 1time use then dispose it into landfill, means that we are fulfilling our needs sufficiently(manufacturing new goods doesn’t mean it has to be from new fresh extracted material from the nature, but can also be from recycled old materials) and adequately(to be able to produce what we need)
