Question by MightyLog: Conservation / living green question?
I own a typical house in the suburbs on about 1/3 of an acre. I’ve pretty much replaced all my regular light bulbs with CFLs. I replaced my old toilet with a low-flush one. I recycle what I can, (which reduced my garbage by about 1/2). I have a veggie garden in the backyard, growing what I can (I plan to expand it next spring). I use a clothesline, whenever possible, for drying. I’m attempting to figure out how I can use rainwater tanks on the downspouts, but I think that might have to wait until next spring.
I’ve thought about installing a few skylights, but the house is pretty small (about 950 sf) and I don’t think that would help much. I’ve also thought about solar panels on the roof, but that is currently not in the budget.
Can anyone give me any more suggestions on what else I can do to “green up”?
After a quick scan here’s some added details.
I live near Green Township, near Cincinnati OH. I haven’t asked them about any incentive type programs yet, but I think I will and see what they have.
I’m trying to figure out where to compost in the backyard, but I keep the dog back there, so I’m sure she’ll try to get into that and make a mess. That just means I’ll have to make sure I secure it well. I like the idea about “moving in the borders” on the lawn. I’ve been working in the other direction on that by expanding the flower beds and planting veggie gardens. I keep telling the wifey that I’m going to take over the yard so I don’t have to mow.
I just noticed the bit of irony that I’m trying to “green up” and I live in Green Township.
It was named after Nathanal Greene, a Revoultionary War hero.
