Green Living Books Q&A: How come main characters in children's books are always orphans?

Question by Sara J.: How come main characters in children’s books are always orphans?
It seems like in popular children’s stories, the main characters are always orphans, or close to it.

For Example:
Harry Potter
Heidi
The Mysterious Benedict Society
Tom Sawyer
Anne of Green Gables
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Little Orphan Annie
James and the Giant Peach
Pippi Longstocking
And, much, Much more.

So why is it always orphans? Not that there’s anything wrong with it just why? lol

God Bless :)

So all children can somewhat relate to them, among other things.
