Green Smart Living Q&A: How much work for a Sun Conure?

Question by Kevin: How much work for a Sun Conure?
I saw one in Pet Smart yesterday and I really want it now because it bobs it’s head etc etc. How big should the cage be? And are they really supposed to be $ 650? Any information on them such as diet. Can they speak, and are they smart enough to learn tricks?
Will it annoy the heck out of me by talking and squaking? Will my 9 year old mutt hate it?

Hey I’m saving up for another one too :)
Their cage should be at least 20x20x30. But i really REALLY suggest you don’t buy from petsmart. They don’t take care of their animals well and they are usually sick. The bird I’m buying from a breeder is $ 600, but I live in Canada so that is probably a good price for you. Conures need special diets because they are known to get blood clotting and need lots of dark veggies. They need fresh fruits and veggies everyday. A Sun Conure is a very hard Conure to care for and are known for their high pitched screaming. They will scream for a lot of reasons even if they get everything they need. So yes it takes a lot of patience to deal with it. And your dog will most likely HATE it. They can speak, but are better at mimicking, and love tricks. They are little clowns. I suggest a Pyhurra Conure though (Black Capped, Green Cheeked, Dusky Headed, White Eyed). These Conures are quieter but with the same amazing personality of the Sun. They require the same diet though and do need at least 2 hours a day of interaction. You should definitely think about this A LOT, A LOT, A LOT, though because they are so much work and live for over 25 years. Maybe a Cockatiel is a better choice for you.

Really think about it okay? They require lots of dedication and time, so if you’re still in school you must have a plan for what you’ll do with it when you go off to college or university.

Oh, listen to this video as loud as you can play it with your ear to the speaker. Then imagine it 2x louder.
