Green Living Roof I'm trying to find materials to use when building a home that will save cost and be more energy efficient?

Question by bbydol221: I’m trying to find materials to use when building a home that will save cost and be more energy efficient?
Any ideas for alternate materials for siding, roof, flooring, counters, etc. Also, do you know the approximate cost for these materials?

These are all noble goals you have. There are inexpensive materials all around us that most people don’t think of for building. One good source of information is the yahoo newsgroup here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/organic_architecture/

The best construction ideas mix ancient, time tested materials with modern knowledge.

My suggestions are that you consider Straw Bale or Cob walls, covered with earth plaster (glorified subsoil, basically), use adobe floor over modern high efficiency foam insulation, and incorporate a living “green” turf roof.

From what I am reading, “modern” tradespeople have forgotten how to work with these natural items, and they disdain them because they think the new stuff is better. They’re wrong. The new stuff molds (drywall), requires you to buy things from a long way away when you could be using local things, and sends your money off elsewhere instead of keeping it local. Mostly, tradespeople don’t want to work with local products, by and large, because if we all figured out how easy we could do it ourselves, we’d never hire them again.

The cost of these things, well of course, they’re very low. You’d pay for your house in no time, and the maintenance would be inexpensive, and you could do it all yourself. Why, I’m not sure if society could handle this!
