Alternative Energy Sources What is the background or history to alternative fuel/energy sources?

Question by lmvks: What is the background or history to alternative fuel/energy sources?
I have a powerpoint that is about alternative fuel/energy but the only slide I need to finish is what is the background or history of alternative fuel/energy sources. So far I have that is dates back to the 1900′s first electric car and the 1970′s use of ethanol because of the gas shortage.

Water and water movement have been used for centuries. It has been used to turn turbines and cogs for all sorts of “heavy machinery” uses. More recently, it has been used to generate electricity.

Steam, wind for generations in other countries, passive solar since the beginning of time, geothermal in multiple ways, and so on. Don’t forget that the term “horse power” did not originate from the automotive industry.
