Question by Wishing on a Dream: How long does it take to get a green card?
Okay, so my boyfriend has told me that he won’t get married until he gets his green card which I understand. He has submitted the paperwork and is in the process of getting it. My question is, how long does it take for one to get a green card?
Also, if we were to get married before he gets it, what happens? He says he will have to go back to his country (El Salvador) for a year. Is this true?
Oh, and I’m in California if that makes a difference in your answer.

I have just finished this process for a family member.
One word of caution. It is illegal for you to enter the U.S. on a tourist or work visa with the clear intent to get a green card while in the States.
If you enter, however, without the intention, but change your mind while here, you can do that legally while remaining here.
Applying for the card will require all sorts of records and documents. Birth certificates, marriage documents, native country police and military records. Everything must be translated into English by a certified translator and notarized.
Someone will have to prove that you will not become dependent on the U.S. for charity, so either you or your sponsor will be required to prove a steady income. That means showing U.S.tax records and/or bank statements, land deeds, etc.
The application itself requires a few hours to complete. Each application must be filed in turn, as you receive approval to proceed to the next step and with utter correctness. I cannot remember all the levels now, but I think at leat six.
From the date of application to receiving the green card was about 32 months.
We did not hire a lawyer, but hiring one will not make it faster, just easier for form filing and far far more expensive.
If however, you cannot read technical instructions in English and follow them to the letter, you will need a lawyer.
Then you must pray that the people who get your file, work diligently. Not all agents are created as equal workers and not all employees are polite, so prepare your egos for some bruising.
If you are from one of the countries in the world where “gifts” help to expedite things, you should know that the “gifts” in America will be useless, unacceptable and could even harm your application.
In the end you may be required to prove, from personal testimony of neighbors and acquaintances, that you are living in the States and are exactly as you represent yourselves.
If any of your family have had certain military training, you will be screened more carefully.
So be prepared to wait.
And no matter what you do,
DO NOT LIE!
about who you are. They will find out. That’s why it takes so long.
