The song “Ballad of the Green Berets” is self explanatory.

Ballad of the Green Berets
(Barry Saddler)

First verse – (Explains what the Green Berets do.)
Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die,
Men who mean just what they say.
The brave men of the Green Beret.

First Chorus – (Explains how difficult it is to become a Green Beret, 3 out of 100 get to wear the Green Beret.)
Silver wings upon their chests,
These are men, America’s best.
100 men we’ll test today
And only three win the Green Beret.

Second verse – (Explains more of what the Green Berets do.)
Trained to live off nature’s land
Trained to combat hand to hand
Men who fight by night and day
Courage take from the Green Beret.

Third verse – (Explains what it’s like to wait at home and then to find out your loved one, in this case a husband and father, has died for a cause he believed in.)
Back at home a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
Leaving her this last request:

Last chorus – (The dead soldier has a son and wants him to grow up to be a Green Beret like his Dad.)
Put silver wings on my son’s chest
Make him one of America’s best
He’ll be a man they’ll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret.
