They certainly make people feel less guilty and more self-righteous. Is that help or hindrance?
A few of them actually save money and do reduce the incremental impact on the environment, but only by a little, and that little reduction is overwhelmed by the increase in goods and the extra damage that increase does.
There are a few “eco friendly” products that have helped, but they were forced on us by the government, not only did people not buy them willingly, they complained bitterly at government interference in their lives.
Classical examples include low-flush toilets and the phasing out of ozone-destroying chlorofluorocarbons.
In short, people are willing to go with eco-friendly as long as it doesn’t inconvenience them. Of course, very few are willing to admit that. Perhaps Texas should be lauded for honesty?
