Green Living Ideas Q&A: What is the best way to get a green card in America?

Question by Sidney: What is the best way to get a green card in America?
I’m seventeen in a few months and intend to live in the US when I’m older. I’m planning on having a gap year after completing year 12 and travelling the states and I want to eventually get a dual citizenship (I’m from Australia).

Anyway, I want to be an actress (mostly theatre) and the Australian acting industry is absolutely terrible (hence the main reason I want to move), so I was wondering what the best method would be to attain a dual citizenship? I know I need a green card first; but which one should I apply for? How long do they take to get processed? Do I need a visa first in order to obtain a green card?

Basically I’m kind of clueless as to where to start and would love someone to point me in the right direction. :)

Thanks.

Your best option would be to obtain a tourist visa (or any type of visa that will enable you to enter the country) then once you are here in the US you should petition for an Employment Authorization visa. Once you have your employment authorization you can legally work here and then you can start petitioning for permanent residency. I hate to say this but it helps if you can find an american (different sex than yours) to marry you because it speeds up the process a lot. Once you become a permanent resident then you can petition for citizenship. Hope this helps but if not check out www.uscis.gov
