Simple Living Q&A: simple life vs consumerism?

Question by Seldom M: simple life vs consumerism?
any of you live a very simple life but still have a passionate career and family life? Could you list your location and your possessions for me? and the structure of your week somewhat?

I would like to change my life and don’t know what all these books about “the simple life and simple living” mean when they talk about it. I just imagine farm land..

what are some things people buy who do not live the simple life? What are these things “consumers” keep buying? I don’t understand this, what are they buying consistantly?
well okay, how about these items:

I would like a home sometime in the future with solar panels, wind turbine, etc..
are these items considered exessive? : couch, dinner table, plants/garden, wall decoration(s), kitchen basics, home library with shelves, music listening setup, board games, laptop, movie veiwing setup, study desk, bicycles (lots), bedroom with nightstand, chest, armoire, lamp, just basics like this…..

is this type of vision just buying into the “simple living” marketing scheme, or is it really much better than the average family who buys dvd’s, k-mart junk items, works endless hours, doesnt grow any food, and is obsessed with brand name clothing and brand new cars. I still have anxiety no matter how hard I try to strive for a less cluttered life with not many material possessions. I just become confused when thinking about what to own, even if I don’t own much – Im trying to figure out exactly what I do want.

Don’t be foolish enough to be an addict…of anything….nicotine, credit, alcohol, etc.
Don’t bother watching what the ‘other guy’ has…why should you care?
