A non-renewable energy source is just that – you use it and it’s gone. Examples include oil, coal, and natural gas. Typically, these are burned to produce heat and waste, so they cause pollution. They need to be collected in order to be used, so there’s an additional environmental impact associated with the collection (mining, drilling, etc.). Renewable energy sources are also what they sound like – you use them today, and they’re still there tomorrow. Examples include solar energy, wind energy, and hydropower. Their collection (solar cells, windmills, hydroelectric dams) are generally more environmentally friendly than non-renewable sorces. Rather than being used to generate heat to turn water into steam to turn electric turbines (which is how most non-renewable energy sources are used), renewable sources typically generate electricity (solar cells) or motion (windmills) directly. The problem with these sources is that the amount of energy they deliver is only a small fraction of what can be obtained with the non-renewable sources, using current technology.
