Question by seh: Decorating a dark apartment…?
I recently moved into a new apartment and am having trouble decorating/personalizing it. The living room has dark green-blue carpet and both it and the kitchen (which are conjoined) have very dark woodwork and cabinets. There is a (small) vaulted ceiling over the living room and it is also done in dark woodwork. The walls (thankfully) are actually painted a neutral beige color.
Since it’s just a rental, I can’t paint anything or change anything in a permanent fashion. The carpet is very thick and I imagine it would be difficult to put a rug down because it would be squishy underneath.
The colors that are there look nice in and of themselves, but I’m just not sure what I can do to work with these colors. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

instead of painting the ceiling you can use a light color fabric in a complementary color to bring some light in the room by draping it along the ceiling
