Being green is living life in a way that is conscious of your impact on the environment. It differs from person to person based on their needs and situation–you can’t expect a large family in the city to live the same way as a single person in the middle of nowhere. It’s about observing your own needs and even a few of your wants and finding a way to meet those in an efficient manner. It’s about doing the most with the least and it’s about learning to do without. It’s about realizing you are not the only creature in this big world.

What inspired it? A lot of is simply how I grew up. My dad is a cheapskate, avid recycler, and compost magician. He believed in reusing things and he didn’t believe in getting lots of things we didn’t need. I have worked with the Boy Scouts for years, and all that camping and Leave No Trace stuff really gets into your blood. I also appreciate the wonder of nature, and I guess “being green” makes me feel a part of nature. I also belong to a religion that believes the earth is sentient and in taking care of yourself–both things lead to “being green”.
