Don’t mistake the people being impoverished, and the country being poor as the same thing.
During the 19th Century, prior to independence Dublin was the second largest city in the United Kingdom. It was a busy administrative centre in Ireland, and a major port for Irish agricultural goods being shipped to Britain.
Belfast was a major industrial centre, with shipbuilding a linen production in the past..
In the modern age, in the last 15-20 years, prior to the recession, the Irish economy was one of the most successful in the world (granted a bit of a bubble economy as it has turned out with this recession) There was a massive amount of investment into the country, through such sectors as pharmaceuticals, electronics, biomedical technology, financial services. This meant that the state had alot of money to be able to invest in and modernise the irish road and motorway network. With the high levels of employment and rising wages, combined with over-generous banks extending the morgage market, it fueled a housing boom to accommodate the growing irish population.
Most Irish people do not live off the land. with the agricultural sector being dominated by large scale farmers. Your image of Ireland is about 60 years out of date.
