Green Living Homes Q&A: How to have a lush hibiscus?

Question by Jake: How to have a lush hibiscus?
I have my Hibiscus inside for the winter, and I was wondering how to get it to be lush and green? I live in North Florida but even here is too cold for them. It was braided, lush, and full of flowers like a little tree when I bought it, but now it has grown taller and there is only few big leaves. How do I get it to be lush again? Also can I trim these branches off to be smaller and give it that bushy affect again?

This is a common problem for tropical plants that need protection from the cold. The plant is adapting to its new location. It was grown under ideal conditions with LOTS of natural light, humidity and nutrients. When we take them home we, more often than not, place them in a location that doesn’t get as much light. Hibiscus need plenty of SUN light or a grow light to keep them full and flowering. The plant will survive fine without as much light, but it simply won’t be as lush as it was when you first bought it. My suggestion for most home owners is to find a nice southern window to keep it close to, but not directly in front of it as heat through the window may be damaging too. This will keep it fairly healthy through the winter months. When Spring arrives and the threat of frost is gone. Place it back outside with a good haircut and a heavy dose of high phosphorus fertilizer. This will encourage new growth and prompt heavy flowering.
Good luck. I wish they did stay like that indoors. We would ALL have them :-)
