Question by pokey1: My fiberglass pool is green and chlorine levels are really high, now what?
I was reading other entries regarding green pools and someone wrote in about adding borax to raise ph. Right now my chlorine level is off the chart and my ph is very low. The “pool store” told me to add more shock and it should clear up the green but I think he is wrong. I have never had to add this much shock in the spring to get my pool cleared up. Where do I buy borax at and how much do I put in?

Apparently the pH is so low that the hypochlorite already in solution is ineffective. Keeping the pH low is unwise and corrosive. You need to add some sort of base (alkaline product) to raise the pH. I am unsure why they recommended borax over any other base. I am sure you have some sort of base already at your place to raise the pH. There is no way we can tell you how much to add because we do not know the pH you have, the reason for the low pH, and the reserve acidity of the water. Without that information no one can advise you. This suggests that you use careful approach for the base you have. Overshooting the alkalinity is not prudent either. Check the label of the product to see what it recommends and add in steps with what is clearly too little initially; measure and record pH after the solution has had time to adjust for the added base. From that you can estimate the next dose level and proceed with stepwise additions. Once you are at or near the targeted pH, remeasure the chlorine and I suspect it will be weak and more sodium hypochlorite solution (pool shock) will be needed.
