Question by Turk: What does a humanitarian major in?
I have recently realized that my true calling in life is humanitarian work, but I don’t know if I’m on the right path. I’m a freshman majoring in geology, and I really do like it, it’s just that I’m not sure it would satisfy my goals. Can geologists do humanitarian work? Do they need geologists in the peace corps? I don’t care about money, in fact I would prefer simple living. Thanks in advance.

While they do not specifically recruit for geologist in the peace corps, there is a need for people to work in the environmental sector. The environmental programs in the Peace Corps are really amazing. A background in geology would help prepare you for environmental careers domestically and abroad.
After the Peace Corps, if you are interested in things like conservation, environmental education or water quality, there are definitely jobs available. Do a google search for Environmental Humanitarian jobs or even Geology Environmental jobs. If you are interested in Engineering Geology, there are some jobs available through UN supported NGOs and through the UN itself.
If you are really set on working internationally, consider a minor in some sort of international studies or a foreign language.
From the brief research I have done, most geologist hired internationally are hired to work in oil, and I’m not sure that is your thing as it isn’t exactly humanitarian.
I would pose your question to the yahoo group peacecorps2. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/peacecorps2/ That group is a very active network of applicants, current volunteers and returned volunteers in the Peace Corps.
