Question by Boots McGraw: North Texans: is June too hot to landscape my property?
I bought a home near Dallas, with nothing in the front yard but two young trees. I want to add bushes and other plants near my house. I’m not trying for any particular effect, other than to cover empty spaces between windows and doors.
Is it now too hot and dry to attempt this? When is a good time to landscape? What low-maintenance greenery should I choose? Since we have long, dry stretches of weather, I’d rather not have to worry too much about weeding or watering.

I live in your area. You can plant now, but it’s much better to plant in the fall or early spring. You’ll have to water lots and lots over the summer just to keep your plants alive.
I would go with native plants that are adapted to the area’s crazy weather shifts. Here are some places to get native and adapted plants: Redenta’s has stores in east Dallas, Arlington and Colleyville. Petal Pushers is in Cedar Hill (my favorite). Rohde’s is in Garland. Green Mama’s is in North Richland Hills.
Good luck.
