Question by Karen: Why does green food-colored water and bleach make blue?
I put a drop of green food coloring in a cup and then added a half cup of water. Then I added 30 drops of bleach. Why does it turn it blue?

I don’t know for a fact, but I would suppose that the green food coloring was actually a mixture of blue and yellow food colorings, and the bleach reacted with the yellow to turn it colorless but didn’t react with the blue.

An alternate explanation might be that the green food coloring was an indicator that turns blue in basic solution. The bleach is basic, so the indicator turned blue.

The truth this matter depends on the exact chemical composition of the green food coloring.
