Green Architecture Do building codes affect architecture in negative ways?

Question by The Ninth Answer: Do building codes affect architecture in negative ways?
Building codes are to ensure the safety of structures, which is clearly important to public health, as well as upholding a key aspect of architecture in the welfare of the structure’s occupants. I’m just curious as to if today’s building codes negatively affect architecture in manipulating the architect’s design. I’m considering pursuing architecture in college, and if building codes are a major burden to the craft, then I might not want to pursue it.

I am not sure of the details of today’s codes, but the architects that I know (who are involved in education as well) seem to approach these types of concerns, along with the challenge to build greener homes and more disability-friendly structures as a positive challenge rather than a burden. It is just part of the job, like making sure there is adequate space for electrical or plumbing.
