Going Green Tips Q&A: Why is there a spiky growth thing on my evergreen?

Question by luv2write: Why is there a spiky growth thing on my evergreen?
The growth or whatever it is is a light pink and has red spikes with lime green tips growing out of it. The evergreen tree doesn’t have sharp needles and has really small, light blue berries. The berries are slightly waxy and I do not know if they are edible. I have no real knowledge of gardening so could I be mistaken? Is the supposed growth just an odd egg sack? There are more then one growths and I haven’t found them anywhere but on this tree.

The tree sounds like a cedar the growth sounds like a gall:

galls are are abnormal, vegetative growths that are usually formed as a response by plants to the action of fungus, mites, or insects such as wasps, aphids, and true bugs. Galls can be formed in the leaves, petioles (stem) of leaves, twigs, buds, or on the roots.
