A light green powder is heated in a test tube. A gas is given off, and the solid becomes black. In which classification of matter does the green powder belong? Explain your reasoning.

The green powder is a CARBONATE.
More precisely it is copper (II) carbonate, which is greenish in colour. It thermally decomposes as follows:
CuCO3 (s) ——-> CuO (s) + CO2 (g)
The gas given off is carbon dioxide, while the copper (II) oxide produced has in fact a black colouration.
