Sustainable Home Design Can there be a MINIMUM size a house must be in certain areas??

Question by ruby: Can there be a MINIMUM size a house must be in certain areas??
I live in Los Angeles, not ultra-wealthy, and looking for a house. The homes I have seen for my budget have been less than inspiring. So, I started researching the possibility of purchasing land and building a prefab modern sustainable home on it; probably a fairly small one and expanding as we are able to. Some of the land that is actually within our budget happens to be in very beautiful and rather posh parts of the LA area with rather enormous mansions. We would love to buy a large, beautiful piece of land and build a modestly sized, but beautifully and simply designed home on it (it’s just the two of us and our two dogs), but I’m wondering if the ritzy neighbors would have issues with that. It’s not like we’re hillbillies or something, we just don’t need all that house. Also, I’m a little concerned about the value of such a home through the years, but if we do this we’ll probably live there for the rest of our lives. If anyone has any feedback/thoughts I would surely appreciate it.

every new house will have to be approved by the zoning board so they can decide how big your house is.
