You’ll probably want to turn in a couple of things.

(1) Color palette (not to be confused with a color wheel). The color palette indicates, usually in rough proportion, what colors you’re thinking of using. Certain groups of color convey different feelings and can affect the “emotion” of a room. Dark colors tend to make the space more intimate, rich and heavy. Lighter colors make spaces lighter and airier. Colors can also suggest other environments: browns, tans, dark greens, earthy reds imply nature. Fluorescent colors as well as metallics suggest the modern world of mass production and industry. Go to your local home improvement store or paint store to pick up paint swatches.

(2) Fabric samples. What type of textures do you want? Smooth and crisp linens? Coarsely woven denims? Shiny and shimmery satins? Tactile chenilles? Country ginghams? Sumptuous velvets? Nubby handwovens? It helps if you can find the types of fabrics you’re looking for in the right colors but that’s not necessary (that’s why the color palette is important to have.) This would apply to upholstery, curtains, pillows. Any fabric trims as well should probably be featured here as well: cording, beaded fringes, ribbon, buttons, feathers and fur. Obtain samples from your local fabric store.

(3) Furniture examples. Pictures of what you’re proposing are OK, you don’t need the ACTUAL pieces. Are they wood? Plastic? Steel? Modular? Historical? One-of-a-kind or mass-produced? Again, the FEEL of the furniture is what is important, not necessarily the color. If you want a Louis XVI highback chair but it’s in purple and your color palette is earth tones, that’s OK.

(4) Accessory samples. Lamps, mirrors, picture frames, wall decor, etc. What are the little touches that will complete your room? Again, pictures should be OK.

(5) Room layout. Usually shown on a grid of 1″=1′. .If you really want to be thorough you could do a diorama of sorts showing relative position of elements, colors and overall feel.

(6) Room sketch(es). This allows you to “pitch” the whole idea in the style, color and arrangement you’re proposing. It can be in marker, watercolor, colored pencil, pastel, whatever your favorite/preferred medium happens to be. While these could be done as architectural elevations (straight-on views of walls without perspective) a 3/4 view of the most flattering view of the room would probably be preferred.

(7) Cost list estimate. While not necessary for your class, in the real world if you’re re-designing someone’s livingroom, they’re going to want to know the bottom line: how much is all this going to cost?
