Answer by Breath on the Wind
Efficiency is a measure of useful power out over power into a system, in this case a house. A super insulated house minimizes heat losses. This makes it more efficient.

We often done consider solar energy because we don’t pay for it. At this time “efficiency” becomes a measure of what energy a solar house requires that must be paid for vs the average house. A house that has many south facing windows that are insulated at night will have a high solar gain. Conventional heating will be minimized and the house is said to be “energy efficient.”

It is even possible to build a house that has no walls and the sun is used to heat surfaces instead of the air. This kind of radiant heat is more efficient (in heating people) as we feel warmer if nearby surfaces are warm even to a lessor degree than the temperatures we normally heat the air. A home with radiant heat could be said to be “energy efficient.”
