Question by : Need an easy solution to brown paneling in living room?
We currently rent a home and the living room and dining room have the old, 70s brown paneling and all the trim has been painted brown. They said we CAN paint it, however with a 4 month old baby and full time job I am having a hard time finding the time, and energy to put into it to do it correctly. It is quite a bit of space to paint.
There is brand new beige carpet and we have a brown couch and brown furnishings (and I did red and burnt orange accents before with a lot of wrought iron hangings, etc before we moved into this rental house). However, these colors seem way to dark now and the wrought iron just blends right into the paneling. So I am looking for inexpensive and easy ideas to brighten it up. I had thought about getting white curtains and doing some bright green and white accents to offfset the brown everywhere. But I have some pretty red things that I don’t wanna just toss away. Ideas please!

I have a couple of ideas.
You could paint the paneling as you suggested. You don’t necessarily have to paint all the paneled walls. You could just paint 1 or 2 adjoining walls.
To paint them, you will first need to clean them then paint w/ a good primer. I suggest Kilz2. About $ 18. a gallon. Use LATEX, water base only. One gallon will easily do 2 or more walls.
When that has dried, about 2 hours, you are ready to paint the top coat. Again, use LATEX only. A good interior paint is Olympic 0 VOC paint. It is environmentally friendly. No odor. Only $ 23. a gallon.
Get a gallon in satin finish, latex. Choose a light neutral color.
With the furnishings you have, a light gray/beige, light blue gray, beige, tans, would all work.
If you choose not to paint, another solution would be to hand curtains over the paneling. You could buy inexpensive curtain panels in sheers, solids, prints, etc and use regular inexpensive rods mounted to the paneling at the ceiling. Hang the curtains and cover the walls or one focal wall.
You could also find some inexpensive large posters and place them in frames to hang on one or two paneled walls.
Say you got 4 2′x3′ posters that coordinated with each other….like all landscapes or all florals, etc.
You can get them for under $ 15. each and the frames about $ 15 each too.
Placing them on one or two walls, spaced evenly, all at the same height would make a big statement in the room. Choose light colored posters to brighten the room.
The light color curtains on windows will work too.
