well, there are green construction products, and there are green construction methods in the way you build which often use green products. green can take on many levels.
green products have an improved life-cycle compared to traditional products, as well as a use benefit.
green construction methods improve on traditional methods through research to build more efficiently, use construction product more efficiently, effectively, and with less waste.
an example is building walls with studs 24 inches on center rather than 16 inches on center to reduce the use of wood when using the appropriate techniques yet not reducing strength. another wall example is using 2×6 studs instead of 2×4 studs so you can increase the amount of insulation you can put in to the wall cavity.
while these are green methods, they don’t have to entail any green products, but they often do. one may use a more green source of insulation in the wall, or a FSC harvested 2×6 wood stud. you can also use these green products and build the more traditional way.
a product is deemed greener when its overall life-cycle entails:
its made from recycled products
its made from renewable products
its made with minimum waste which is often reused or recycled
its made with less toxic, polluting, or harmful products
its made with less energy
its made locally to the final location reducing fuel use
its designed to be used with less waste, energy, or harmful installation products
its designed to save energy or use renewable fuels
its designed to reduce other harmful issues (mold, etc)
it can be installed with minimal health impact on laborer
it can be recycled easily at end of life
it can last longer than traditional products
