Pure Green Living Dog has green diarrhea, does anyone know what is wrong?

Question by Becca S: Dog has green diarrhea, does anyone know what is wrong?
My dog is a 6-year-old rat terrier that recently (about 11 days ago) got treated for heartworms (I have no clue if this is what is causing it, as I cant’ find any information online, so I wanted to mention it) with his last of two shots.

Today, around I’d say 7 I caught him using the bathroom in the house, which isn’t normal. I shooed him off while I cleaned it up (at the time it looked like diarrhea and was normal brown). After I cleaned it up I went searching for him so I could take him outside in case he still had to go and found him throwing up. I quickly cleaned that up and took him outside where he stood for a good 10 minutes trying to use the bathroom and barely getting anything out. He proceeded to “sit” down in the grass after trying and licked his butt, which is in no way normal; I have never seen him act like that before.

That was around 7pm. I read online that diarrhea might occur in dogs with heartworms as with throwing up so I didn’t think to much of it since there wasn’t much I could do with the vet being closed for the night.

Since then he has gotten diarrhea very frequently around 8:30, 11, and 1. It started out brownish and then started to turn a yellowish color and the past two times have been green. I would describe one as a lime green and the last, which was 40 minutes ago as pure green.

I have been trying to guess and take the little guy out when I think he has to go, but he never goes when I take him outside anymore, just when the feeling comes and I can't catch him fast enough to take him outside.

I live an hour from the nearest emergency center and being without transport while my finance is working the late shift I am stuck home alone worried about my dog. I tried calling the center but like many times before they won't answer questions over the phone since they can't be certain without seeing the animal. I am going to call the vet ASAP tomorrow, but I am not sure what to do in the meantime. I am scared for my dog and it is late, I have been keeping him in a kennel at night because of the heartworms, but I don't know what to do now, I don't want him to use the bathroom all over himself while I sleep or fall really ill.

My question is, does anyone know if this is fatal? I am already planning calling the vet ASAP in the morning, but I need to get through tonight first. Does anyone have any information that can help me regarding what the problem is? And mostly what advice should I take on what to do with him tonight sleeping wise? The vet has already told me he can't stay outside due to his worms and I can't risk him sleeping with me and getting diarrhea all over my bed, but then again I can't stand the thought of him doing it all over himself. I wish I could stay up with him all night and make sure he is ok, but I do have work in the morning and must be going to bed in about an hour. Can anyone please help me?
To answer some questions asked. He isn’t neutered, he was breeding with our female dog until recently when she herself got neutered, but he hasn’t been able to get neutered with his heartworms.

We have lived in the same house for over 2 years and he has been on the same dog food for at least 6 months, given he gets treats occasionally, I doubt he got into anything he shouldn’t have, because I have been watching him like a hawk lately to make sure he is calm and stays out of things so his heartworm problem isn’t a problem.

Because most of the common reasons a dog gets diarrhea don’t apply here I was thinking it had to do with the heartworms or maybe the weather? It has gotten pretty hot recently.

This sounds fairly normal for a dog who has just undergone heartworm treatment. The throwing up and diarrhea is his body’s way of riding itself of the worms. But just to be safe, please take him back to the vet as soon as possible.
